The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its 51st edition by unveiling five special presentations for this year. These announcements follow the earlier revelation of the opening-night film and gala presentations. Among the highlights are the premieres of the sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian revenge thriller “Glaxo,” the romance film “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the true-story Nazi hunting drama “The Housewife,” and the action film “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” featuring Mahershala Ali.
“Alpha Gang” will have its international debut at the festival, marking its first screening outside its home country. The film, directed by David and Nathan Zellner, portrays a group of aliens disguised as a 1950s biker gang attempting to conquer Earth but facing unexpected emotions. The star-studded cast includes Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, and Léa Seydoux.
Adapted from a novel by Argentinian author Hernán Ronsino, “Glaxo” focuses on a small-town drama intertwined with desire and revenge. Directed by Benjamin Naishtat, the film explores Argentina’s societal changes during the 1950s-1980s. “Love of Your Life,” led by Margaret Qualley and Patrick Schwarzenegger, delves into themes of loss and romance and is produced by Ryan Gosling.
“The Housewife,” a psychological drama by Canadian director Ben Shirinian, is based on a New York Times journalist’s investigation into a suspected Nazi officer living in Queens. Starring Naomi Watts, Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Norman Reedus, the film delves into complex relationships and historical mysteries.
“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” stars Mahershala Ali as a hitman dealing with faith and family tragedy. Directed by Bassam Tariq, the film promises thrilling action akin to “John Wick” and features a strong supporting cast including Giancarlo Esposito and John Cho.
TIFF has also announced that Siân Heder’s “Being Heumann” will open the festival, with other premieres like “Prima Facie” and “The Assassin(s)” to follow. The festival is scheduled to run from Sept. 10 to 20, with the full lineup set to be revealed on Aug. 11. Ticket sales will commence for TIFF members on Aug. 21 and for the general public on Aug. 31.
