“Strait of Hormuz Conflict Sparks Oil Price Surge”

Oil prices surged on Monday due to the escalating conflict in Iran disrupting tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the significance of this passage for global oil supply. The strait, located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, facilitates the transportation of approximately 20% of the world’s oil. Tankers from countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Iran navigate through this crucial route, primarily transporting oil to Asia.

The interruption of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz poses a significant disruption to the oil trade. According to Hakan Kaya, a senior portfolio manager at Neuberger Berman, a temporary slowdown lasting a week or two could be managed by oil companies. However, a prolonged closure lasting a month or more could lead to a substantial increase in crude oil prices, potentially surpassing triple digits.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway about 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, serves as a vital link connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, enabling global ship travel. While Iran and Oman hold territorial waters in the strait, it is recognized as an international waterway accessible to all ships. The United Arab Emirates, home to Dubai, is situated near this strategic waterway.

Throughout history, the strait has played a crucial role in trade, facilitating the movement of various commodities like ceramics, ivory, and textiles. In contemporary times, it serves as a key route for supertankers carrying oil and gas to markets in Asia, including China, which is Iran’s major oil customer.

The recent turmoil has prompted global shippers to suspend operations in the area. Major shipping companies like Maersk have halted vessel crossings in the Strait of Hormuz. The heightened risks have led to a significant number of oil tankers waiting in the Mideast Gulf for passage, causing disruptions in global energy transportation.

Iran’s temporary closure of parts of the strait in mid-February for military exercises resulted in a notable increase in oil prices. Past instances of tension have seen Iran interfering with shipping in the region, with naval activities disrupting traffic.

The current situation underscores the critical importance of the Strait of Hormuz and its potential impact on global energy markets. The ongoing conflict in the region continues to raise concerns about oil supply disruptions and price volatility.
