RCMP officials from Kinngait have confirmed the tragic discovery of two missing fishermen on New Year’s Eve. The authorities were alerted on December 31st that a 70-year-old father and his 38-year-old son had not returned home after setting out to check their fishing nets approximately 15 kilometers away from the community.
Due to adverse weather conditions, a ground search was initially delayed. However, search teams eventually located the fishermen’s snowmobile about 11 kilometers from Kinngait, but there was no sign of the individuals. On January 2nd, the bodies of the two men were found approximately five kilometers from the community.
The RCMP has chosen not to disclose the identities of the deceased individuals or provide details regarding the circumstances of their deaths. They have indicated that no foul play is suspected, leading them to conclude their investigation. The Nunavut Coroner’s Service has now taken over the case for further examination and analysis.
