“BC Premier Eby Updates on Oil Pipeline Progress”

British Columbia Premier David Eby provided an update on the proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast following a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. Eby described the meeting as cordial but noted that there were no significant developments regarding the pipeline project. Smith and Carney had previously signed a memorandum of understanding outlining a pathway for the pipeline, emphasizing the need for a private proponent and the involvement of Alberta and B.C. First Nations. Despite this, Eby and some B.C. Indigenous communities have expressed concerns about the project.

During their meeting, Eby indicated that there was no indication of a private proponent or support from affected Indigenous groups at this stage. He reiterated that there had been no substantial progress towards materializing the pipeline, and B.C.’s stance on the matter remains unchanged. Eby’s past concerns revolved around the potential diversion of resources from existing projects with private backers and Indigenous backing.

While Eby described the meeting as “borderline friendly,” he acknowledged that they share common goals and are focusing on collaborative efforts to address shared issues. Smith also characterized the meeting as productive and committed to keeping Eby informed about developments. Carney, on the other hand, reaffirmed his commitment to the pipeline project during a recent question period, emphasizing the importance of reaching tidewater.

Smith plans to present a proposal to the federal Major Projects Office later this year, aiming to attract a private proponent and gain support from First Nations groups. She believes that providing more clarity on the project route will be crucial in securing backing from Indigenous communities. The project has garnered support from other premiers, including Saskatchewan’s Scott Moe and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, who emphasized the importance of the pipeline for Canada’s future.

As discussions continue, Eby remains focused on other pressing issues, while Canada’s premiers gather in Ottawa for upcoming trade talks with the U.S. and Mexico. The renegotiation of the North American trade pact is set to commence in the coming months, highlighting the significance of ongoing interprovincial and international discussions.
