Atle Lie McGrath, a Norwegian skier, secured victory at the Wengen World Cup slalom event, marking his second consecutive win and solidifying his position as a top contender for the upcoming Olympics. McGrath extended his lead from the first run, finishing 0.47 seconds ahead of Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, a Norwegian skier competing for Brazil, and 0.81 seconds ahead of his teammate Henrik Kristoffersen.
This triumph marked McGrath’s fifth career victory and 19th podium finish on the World Cup circuit. McGrath, who also clinched silver in last season’s world championships, claimed his second win of the season following a previous slalom victory in Alta Badia, Italy. Expressing his excitement, McGrath described the race as legendary and highlighted the joy of sharing the podium with Braathen and Kristoffersen.
With two more slalom events remaining before the start of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Feb. 6, McGrath, whose father competed in the 1988 Calgary Olympics, showcased his skill by navigating the course strategically and accelerating in key sections. Reflecting on his performance, McGrath emphasized his calculated risks and considered the race one of the best in his career.
After the intense competition, McGrath and Braathen, who share the same age and birthdate, embraced in celebration, reminiscing on their early days of skiing and the progress they have made. Additionally, Kristoffersen reached a milestone in his career by securing his 100th podium finish.
