“Tragic Snowmobile Accident Highlights Winter Trail Safety”

A tragic snowmobile accident occurred in Atikokan, Ont., on New Year’s Day, emphasizing the importance of safety while enjoying winter trails. Emergency services responded to a single-vehicle snowmobile crash on the Saturn Avenue extension around 11 a.m. on Jan. 1, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old Atikokan resident. This incident, the first fatal snowmobile collision in the region this year, is currently under investigation.

According to data from the OPP North West Region, there have been three fatal snowmobile collisions reported in the northwest between 2020 and 2025, excluding December 2025.

Adrian Tessier, president of the Thunder Bay Adventure Trail Snowmobile Club, expressed deep sorrow over the recent fatality, emphasizing the need for vigilance within the snowmobiling community.

While preparing for the upcoming season, Tessier highlighted the improved trail conditions following recent snowfall, thanks to the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs receiving an additional $3.9 million from the province. Despite the enhanced trail system, safety remains a top priority.

Tessier warned about the high speeds and power of modern snowmobiles, stressing the importance of self-regulation and awareness of surroundings to prevent accidents. He advised riders to carry essential survival supplies and never travel alone, even on groomed trails.

It is recommended that riders inform someone about their travel plans and carry communication devices for emergencies. The status of groomed trails across the province can be checked through the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs’ interactive trail guide online.
