“Toronto to Boost Bike Share Program with More E-Bikes in 2026”

The City of Toronto plans to enhance its bike share program by introducing more e-bikes this year following a surge in ridership last year. According to the annual operating plan presented to the Toronto Parking Authority board of directors, Bike Share Toronto experienced a 40% increase in individual ridership in 2025 compared to 2024. Additionally, the total number of rides taken rose by 10%, totaling 7.8 million trips, with approximately 231,000 first-time riders in 2025.

E-bikes proved to be highly popular, delivering more than double the number of trips per day compared to regular bikes in 2025. To meet the growing demand, the city plans to add 200 new e-bikes, 350 e-docks, and 750 regular bikes this year. Furthermore, 1,200 new solar stations will be installed across the network. Urban planning professor Raktim Mitra from Toronto Metropolitan University noted that e-bikes are favored for enabling new and novice cyclists to comfortably tackle longer distances with less physical strain.

Last year saw a 39% increase in first-time riders, totaling about 231,000, with the projected number of trips expected to reach around 8.6 million this year. Michael Longfield, the executive director of Cycle Toronto, described the bike share program as a catalyst for introducing people to cycling and expressed enthusiasm for its success and expansion, emphasizing the growing demand for outdoor activities and alternative transportation options.

Mitra highlighted the importance of proper infrastructure in fostering the growth of the city’s bike share program and cycling culture. This expansion initiative follows Toronto City Council’s approval of adding 20 kilometers of new bike lanes, juxtaposed with the province’s appeal against a court ruling to eliminate 19 kilometers of protected bike lanes along Bloor Street, Yonge Street, and University Avenue.

With the upcoming FIFA World Cup expected to bring increased traffic to the city, the expansion of Bike Share Toronto is seen as a means to alleviate congestion and enhance mobility within downtown areas. The program’s expansion is estimated to cost slightly over $10 million, with a reported revenue of $17.1 million generated last year, surpassing the initial projection by $2.3 million.
