Nova Scotia Boy, 13, Dies in Dog Attack: Community Mourns

A 13-year-old boy in Nova Scotia has tragically passed away after being attacked by three dogs, leading to deep sorrow in the local community. Drew Nickerson, a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School, is being fondly remembered as a nature lover and a cherished friend by many. A heartfelt tribute penned by a family member is now part of an online fundraising effort to support the boy’s mother during this difficult time.

The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education expressed its condolences, acknowledging the significant impact of the loss on the school community. Counseling and assistance services have been made available to help students cope with the tragedy.

The incident occurred on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown, N.S., just north of Shelburne, when the boy was attacked by the dogs while riding his bicycle around 5 p.m. on Saturday. Following the attack, he was swiftly airlifted to a hospital in Halifax via LifeFlight helicopter, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have confirmed that the dogs responsible for the attack, described as “large-breed,” have been euthanized by a veterinarian. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have initiated an investigation into the incident, with no charges filed as of the latest update on Tuesday.

The community continues to mourn the loss of the young boy as they seek answers and closure in the wake of this tragic event.
