The upcoming edition of New York’s highly anticipated event is facing challenges this year, not due to declining attendance, glamour, or budget, but because of criticism, negative publicity, and calls for a boycott. Nonetheless, the annual fashion show and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will still showcase its glamour on May 4. The theme for this year’s show, “Costume Art,” aims to highlight fashion as a significant element throughout the history of art.
The chosen dress code, “Fashion is Art,” offers maximum flexibility for the red carpet attendees. Curator Andrew Bolton expressed to The Associated Press that the theme intends to eliminate the outdated debate on whether fashion should be considered part of the art world. Bolton mentioned that they are now exploring art through the lens of fashion, a reversal from their previous approach.
Last year, the event raised a record-breaking sum exceeding $31 million US and will now take place in the newly established 1,115-square-meter Condé M. Nast Galleries. The event will feature a diverse representation of mannequins, including figures often overlooked in art history, with a focus on large and disabled bodies. Notable co-chairs for this year’s gala include Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé, marking Beyoncé’s return after a decade.
The gala will also see the presence of a star-studded “host committee” led by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, with names like Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Lena Dunham, Misty Copeland, Angela Bassett, and Aimee Mullins joining the lineup.
However, the gala’s association with Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos as honorary chairs has sparked controversy. The couple is the primary funding source for this year’s event, a departure from the usual luxury brand sponsors. This partnership has led to protests in New York City, criticizing the gala as “the Bezos Met Gala” and highlighting Amazon’s alleged involvement in various controversies.
The Met Gala, known for its opulence and exclusivity, has faced criticism for its high ticket prices and perceived elitism, especially amidst growing wealth inequality. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to skip the event due to affordability concerns reflects a departure from the tradition of city leaders attending. The gala’s cultural significance may be waning, particularly with the potential retirement of Vogue’s influential figurehead, Anna Wintour, who transformed the gala into its current status.
As the gala approaches, questions arise about its future without Wintour’s leadership, especially as the fashion industry undergoes changes and challenges. Despite uncertainties, the Costume Institute has been prudent in building a financial reserve from past gala proceeds, ensuring its sustainability in the face of potential disruptions.
