A man who attempted to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course in 2024 has been sentenced to life in prison. Ryan Routh’s fate was determined by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who condemned his actions as unacceptable. The sentencing took place in the same Fort Pierce courtroom where Routh had caused a commotion by attempting self-harm after being found guilty by jurors.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Shipley emphasized the gravity of Routh’s offense, stating that it undermines American democracy when individuals resort to violence against political figures. Despite Routh’s new defense attorney arguing for leniency, the judge highlighted his criminal history, leading to a life sentence without the possibility of parole, along with additional years for a gun-related charge.
During the sentencing, Routh read a lengthy statement, claiming he had lived a good life, but the judge dismissed his remarks, labeling his actions as deliberate and evil. The prosecutors pointed out Routh’s lack of remorse and disregard for the law, advocating for a severe punishment, which the judge ultimately upheld.
Routh’s trial revealed his meticulous planning to assassinate Trump while the latter was playing golf at his West Palm Beach country club. The Secret Service intervened before any harm could be done, with an agent firing at Routh as he aimed his rifle.
Routh’s history of felony convictions and anti-Trump sentiments, as evidenced by his writings and online activities, further painted a picture of his disdain for the law and authority. Despite attempts to represent himself in court, the judge appointed legal counsel to ensure a fair trial process.
