Swiss skier Marco Odermatt showcased his dominance once again by clinching a record fifth consecutive victory at the Adelboden giant slalom competition. Despite challenging weather conditions with snowfall and poor visibility, Olympic champion Odermatt maintained his lead from the first run to secure a 0.49-second win over Lucas Pinheiro Braathen of Brazil, with Leo Anguenot of France finishing third, trailing by 0.68 seconds.
Pinheiro Braathen commended Odermatt’s performance, acknowledging him as the “king of the hill” and expressing the honor of competing against him in such a prestigious event. Odermatt’s triumph marked his fifth consecutive giant slalom win at Adelboden since 2022, surpassing the legendary Ingemar Stenmark’s four-win streak from the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Reflecting on his success, Odermatt shared his deep connection to Adelboden, describing it as his “first love” and a place that holds a special significance for him since childhood. The enthusiastic support from the crowd of approximately 25,000 fans added to the thrill of the competition, motivating Odermatt to push himself even harder.
The event commenced with a moment of silence to honor the victims of a recent tragic fire in Crans-Montana, emphasizing the somber backdrop against which the thrilling races unfolded. Odermatt’s exceptional season continued as he extended his lead in the overall standings, showcasing his prowess with his sixth race victory of the season and his 51st career win, solidifying his status as one of the top performers in the sport.
For Pinheiro Braathen, the Adelboden competition held personal significance as he overcame past challenges and injuries to secure a remarkable second-place finish. The history of the Adelboden giant slalom dates back to 1967, with iconic names like Jean-Claude Killy gracing the winner’s podium in the early years of the event. The unique terrain of the Chuenisbaergli course, characterized by rolling pastures and a thrilling final slope, provided a spectacular backdrop for the intense competition.
As the competition at Adelboden concluded, the focus now shifts to the upcoming slalom event, where Pinheiro Braathen is poised to continue his impressive performance from the giant slalom race, while Odermatt looks ahead to his next challenge in the World Cup circuit.
