“Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation Kids Thrilled at 2026 World Juniors”

A group of children from Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation had an exciting time watching Canada play against Latvia at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship in Minnesota on December 27. Sue Boshey, a council member for the First Nation, helped organize the trip. She mentioned that the kids and their parents, who traveled from their community east of Fort Frances in northwestern Ontario, were filled with excitement as they watched the game live. Boshey shared that everyone was wearing red and white jerseys and described the experience as awesome.

The families from Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation have a tradition of coming together to watch the world junior hockey championship after Christmas. Canada secured a 2-1 victory over Latvia in overtime, with Michael Hage scoring the winning goal on a power play. Boshey expressed her excitement about finally being able to watch the world juniors and witnessing the joy on the kids’ faces, as well as the parents who had longed to experience the event.

Although the group didn’t get a chance to meet the Canadian team, Boshey emphasized that the experience was still rewarding. She mentioned that parents were grateful for the opportunity to attend such an event with their families. Boshey highlighted the humbling and fulfilling nature of the experience for everyone involved.

In a subsequent match, the Czech Republic dashed Canada’s hopes of winning the gold medal at the championship. Tomas Poletin sealed the victory for the Czechs with a goal late in the third period, ending Canada’s streak of consecutive gold medals. Players like Gavin McKenna and Porter Martone expressed their disappointment at falling short but acknowledged the team’s effort in the face of defeat.
