“Iran’s Leader Warns of Conflict Amid U.S. Tensions”

Iran’s top leader issued a stern warning on Sunday, cautioning that any potential aggression from the United States could spark a widespread conflict in the Middle East. This statement comes amidst escalating tensions, with U.S. President Donald Trump considering military action against Iran in response to its handling of recent nationwide protests.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, aged 86, made these remarks, marking his most direct threat yet, as U.S. naval forces, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, are stationed in the Arabian Sea following Tehran’s violent crackdown on demonstrations. While it remains uncertain whether Trump will resort to military force, he has repeatedly mentioned Iran’s willingness to negotiate, highlighting concerns about the country’s nuclear activities.

Khamenei characterized the protests as an attempted coup, indicating a firm stance by the Iranian government. Reports suggest tens of thousands have been detained since the protests started, primarily driven by economic grievances. The prospect of sedition charges, which carry severe penalties including death, raises fears of mass executions – a red line for the U.S.

In response, Iran had scheduled a live-fire military exercise in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade. The U.S. military’s Central Command cautioned against any interference with American vessels or commercial traffic during the drill.

Speaking at a gathering in Tehran to commemorate Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, Khamenei accused the U.S. of coveting Iran’s resources, emphasizing that any aggression would lead to a regional conflict. He emphasized Iran’s defensive stance but warned of a robust response to any hostile actions.

Furthermore, Khamenei condemned the protests as a form of coup, aimed at destabilizing key institutions. The Human Rights Activists News Agency reports a high number of detentions and casualties, with conflicting figures between official sources and independent reports due to restrictions on internet access in Iran.

The speaker of Iran’s parliament retaliated against the EU’s labeling of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group by reciprocally designating all European military forces as terrorist entities. This move, largely symbolic, reflects ongoing tensions between Iran and Western powers.

Trump, on the other hand, has set clear conditions for military intervention, emphasizing the protection of peaceful protesters and detainees from potential mass executions. He also underscored concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, suggesting ongoing discussions with Iranian officials to reach a satisfactory agreement and avert further escalation.

As the situation unfolds, global attention remains focused on the delicate balance of power in the region, with diplomatic efforts crucial in averting a full-blown conflict.
