Netflix and Warner Music Group Team Up for Music Documentaries

Netflix and Warner Music Group (WMG) have recently inked an exclusive multi-year agreement to create documentary series and films delving into the lives, music, and legacies of the label’s artists. This collaboration, disclosed on Friday, grants Netflix access to one of the most extensive music catalogs in history. WMG represents iconic figures like David Bowie, Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, as well as modern stars including Charli XCX, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars.

This deal signifies the latest development in a competitive landscape where music rights holders and streaming platforms are vying to transform vast music collections into premium visual content to allure subscribers. Music documentaries have emerged as a popular medium for fan-centered and culturally significant programming, exemplified by the success of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” film, which garnered over $260 million globally.

Under the terms of the agreement, WMG will collaborate with Unigram, a production company aligned with the label, to produce long-form projects. Each project will be developed in partnership with the artists or their estates. This partnership enhances Netflix’s expanding lineup of music content, solidifying its reputation as a frontrunner in the genre, with acclaimed releases like “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce” and “Quincy.”

Competing platforms are also heavily investing in music storytelling. Disney+ features a variety of prominent releases, such as “The Beach Boys,” while Max has gained attention with documentaries like “Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.,” spotlighting historic labels and influential artists. Apple Music has ventured into original music video content, creating documentaries and streaming live concerts through its Apple Music Live series, showcasing artists like Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.
