“U.S. Car Industry Grapples with Affordability Crisis”

The U.S. car industry is facing a persistent affordability challenge, potentially pushing more Americans towards used cars and exposing automakers to competition from lower-priced brands. The issue has become a topic of debate among lawmakers, with President Donald Trump and Republicans attributing it to environmental and safety regulations, while Democrats point to Trump’s tariffs.

Despite the political discourse, a review of industry sales data by Reuters reveals that the main driver of the problem lies in the market itself. Automakers have focused on introducing fewer budget-friendly models while flooding showrooms with larger, more luxurious vehicles, raising the average price of a new car in the U.S. to approximately $47,000.

This shift towards upscale vehicles exemplifies the widening wealth gap in the U.S. economy, where affluent consumers dominate spending, leaving middle- and lower-income individuals struggling to afford new cars. As a result, a significant portion of the car-buying population has shifted towards higher income brackets, pushing many lower- and middle-class buyers towards the used car market.

The limited availability of affordable options has frustrated consumers like Sarah Merriman from Delaware, who is facing challenges finding a replacement for her leased Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV without significantly increasing her monthly payment. This affordability issue poses a significant risk for traditional automakers, as they may lose market share to potential new entrants, particularly Chinese brands, if they continue to neglect less affluent consumers.

The debate around affordability has gained prominence in the run-up to the midterm elections, with the Trump administration highlighting the need to lower vehicle prices by relaxing fuel-efficiency standards. The average transaction price for new vehicles has surged by 40% over the past few years, reaching around $47,000, driven by a preference for pricier trucks, SUVs, and fully loaded models.

While the number of expensive models priced above $40,000 has increased substantially, the availability of budget-friendly options has dwindled. This shift has reshaped the income demographics of new car buyers, with a declining share of purchases coming from households earning $100,000 or less.

Automakers like GM, Ford, and Stellantis have capitalized on this trend by phasing out entry-level models in favor of higher-margin SUVs and trucks, leading to increased profits despite lower sales volumes. GM, for instance, has emphasized its commitment to affordability by offering small SUVs as entry-level choices.

Looking ahead, Ford plans to introduce more affordable models under $40,000, including electric options priced around $30,000. Stellantis’ Jeep brand, known for its off-road vehicles, has also shifted towards upscale offerings but is now focusing on enhancing affordability to regain market share. CEO Antonio Filosa has prioritized making Jeep features more accessible and reducing prices to attract customers back to the brand.
