A successful nuclear refurbishment project has concluded at the Darlington power plant, with the unit primed for reactivation in the near future. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce revealed the completion of the refurbishment ahead of schedule, boasting a cost savings of $150 million under the $12.8 billion budget. The extensive refurbishment encompassed all four nuclear reactor units at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, ensuring operational efficiency until at least 2055.
The government led by Premier Doug Ford has embraced nuclear power to address the surging electricity demands of the province, with plans for four small modular reactors at the Darlington site. Additionally, there are considerations for a new nuclear facility near Port Hope, Ontario, and refurbishing initiatives at the Pickering nuclear plant to prolong its operational lifespan. Notably, the province is also exploring the prospect of a new large-scale plant at Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ontario.
