“British Columbia Grants $3.3 Million to Sumas Prairie Flood Resilience”

The government of British Columbia has pledged $3.3 million for flood resilience projects in the Sumas Prairie area of Abbotsford, B.C., in response to the city’s second significant flood event in four years. The allocated funds for the Sumas River Watershed Flood Mitigation Initiative will be utilized for structural enhancements and restoration efforts in the agricultural lands of the city.

Initiatives such as augmenting water pumping capacity, reconstructing roads, implementing temporary flood storage solutions, incorporating fish-friendly infrastructure, and constructing dikes are under consideration for the project, as stated by Kelly Greene, the Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness for British Columbia. Greene mentioned that the planning process has been meticulous to avoid inadvertently heightening risks in other parts of the area while reducing risks in specific zones.

Although Mayor Ross Siemens was not available for an interview, he emphasized the significance of the funding as a crucial step towards flood mitigation infrastructure development. Siemens highlighted that while the current funding is essential, a comprehensive and large-scale solution requires substantial financial backing from higher levels of government.

Recent floods in December in the Fraser Valley resulted in an estimated $74 million in insured damages, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Alex Mitchell, the CEO of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, mentioned that the necessary funding to safeguard the area amounts to approximately $1.8 billion.

Chief Dalton Silver from the Semá:th First Nation stressed the importance of considering ecological aspects during the planning phase, emphasizing the need to protect fisheries, habitats, wildlife, and ecosystems.

Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Canada (HICC) announced a $6 billion fund in November to support local infrastructure upgrades nationwide. The funding is set to commence in the fiscal year 2026-2027, with detailed funding commitments to be disclosed at a later date.

Minister Greene revealed plans to engage federal officials in flood mitigation strategies during her upcoming visit to Ottawa, emphasizing the necessity for the federal government’s active participation in the process.

The Sumas flood mitigation initiative, signed by six entities including First Nations like Semá:th, Leq’á:mel, Máthxwi, and local governments such as Abbotsford and Chilliwack, along with the provincial government, was established following severe flooding in November 2021.
