“Uncertain Future for HBO Content on Crave Amid Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger”

Canadians eagerly awaiting the debut of HBO’s highly-anticipated adaptation of the beloved “Harry Potter” series, scheduled to premiere early next year, will be able to enjoy it on Crave in Canada. However, the future of Crave’s exclusive rights to HBO content, including “Harry Potter” and popular shows like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” and “House of the Dragon,” remains uncertain.

Paramount Skydance is in the process of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO and HBO Max, in a deal valued at $110 billion US (about $150 billion Cdn), subject to expected federal approval by year-end. This acquisition raises questions about existing agreements with Canadian broadcasters and streamers, such as Crave, and whether Canadian viewers will need to subscribe to another service for their favorite shows.

The potential merger could have significant implications for the streaming landscape in Canada. Paramount’s subscription service, Paramount+, and its ad-supported TV service, Pluto TV, are already accessible in Canada. Paramount Skydance’s CEO, David Ellison, expressed intentions to merge these platforms with HBO Max into a unified streaming service to enhance competitiveness in the market.

While the future distribution of HBO content in Canada remains uncertain, Bell Media, the owner of Crave, reassures audiences that they will continue to enjoy HBO and HBO Max programming for the foreseeable future. The current agreement between Bell Media and Warner Bros. Discovery ensures ongoing access to these popular shows on Crave.

In the event that Paramount+ begins offering HBO content in Canada, it might not completely vanish from Crave. Similar to the U.S., where certain HBO titles have been available on multiple platforms, some content may still be accessible through Crave even with the potential changes.

The potential consolidation of Pluto TV, Paramount+, and HBO Max under Paramount Skydance’s vision raises questions about the impact on Canadian distributors like Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global TV. The implications of this merger on various Canadian streamers, including Corus and Rogers Sports & Media, which have existing partnerships with Warner Bros. Discovery, remain to be seen.

As the streaming landscape evolves with these mega-deals, Canadian audiences can expect changes in content availability and distribution across different platforms.
