A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing increased interest following a mention on a popular American TV series. The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in an episode of the acclaimed medical drama “The Pitt,” where a character plans to visit the landmark in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The site, located approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, holds historical significance as a place where Indigenous people herded bison over a cliff for harvesting.
Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, has observed a rise in visitor curiosity sparked by the TV show reference. Crow Shoe mentioned that the show’s mention generated significant social media and email engagement, bringing awareness and interest to the site. The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually.
The recent buzz surrounding the buffalo jump has not waned, and Crow Shoe anticipates a boost in visitor numbers and tours during the peak season from May to September. Promotions like discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass have also contributed to increased footfall. Crow Shoe highlighted the site’s integration with other attractions in southern Alberta, encouraging visitors to explore the region comprehensively.
Travel Alberta capitalized on the TV show reference by releasing a promotional video featuring the characters against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir shared the TV clip on social media, expressing pride in Alberta’s historical landmarks resonating with global audiences.
