Channel 5 viewers were in for a treat as the channel premiered its new gripping miniseries. The series featured a plethora of familiar faces as drama centred around an average suburban couple whose dream home extension rapidly descends into a nightmare.
A seemingly friendly neighbourhood soon turns chaotic, with escalating tensions leading to explosive arguments and hidden secrets being unearthed. As fans tuned in, many recognised stars from some of the UK’s most beloved shows, including Only Fools and Horses, EastEnders, Coronation Street and Black Mirror.
The series boasts a star-studded cast, including Jill Halfpenny, known for her roles as Rebecca Hopkins on ITV’s Coronation Street, Kate Mitchell on EastEnders and Izzie Redpath in Waterloo Road, alongside Spooks star Rupert Penry-Jones. Tessa Peake Jones, famous for her role in Only Fools and Horses, also joins the lineup.
Fans were ecstatic about the casting, with one exclaiming: “It’s Raquel from only fools and horses! Haven’t seen her in years!” Another noted: “Think I have counted at least 5 soap stars so far. The Channel 5 payroll” and “Watching #thefeud on channel 5 rupert penry-jones will always be Adam from spooks.”
However, others were less than impressed with the new series. One bored user slammed: “Limited channels at the hotel last night so had the misfortune of watching new Channel 5 drama ‘The Feud’.
“47 minutes of the entire first episode consisted of Jill Halfpenny getting a quote for a kitchen extension. Riveting television.”
And others claimed they had to switch off after being “beyond disappointed” with a “stupid” spot. As the Barnetts were snooped on by suspicious neighbour Nick, played by The Thick of It and The Inbetweeners’ Alex Macqueen, after making their announcement to extend their kitchen, a row begins.
The row then starts to spiral when Nick’s CCTV footage of the extension build, still awaiting planning permission, is shared within the street’s mobile group chat. Despite the plausible storyline, fans vented their frustration at the show.
“I had to switch off,”one Twitter/ X user wrote. “Had enough after 15 mins… shame because C5 are normally pretty good with the dramas.”
Another added: “I usually love these CH5 dramas, But #TheFeud is really hard to watch, The acting seems so poor! And I feel like I know what’s going to happen already.”
But it wasn’t just the acting that was targeted. Fans hit out at the music on the show too, with one user saying: “That stupid continual background music is driving me mad ! So unnecessary #TheFeud.”
Another agreed, criticising the “annoying background music”.
It wasn’t all negative, though. One happy user penned: “#TheFeud on @channel5_tv looking great already. A great 6-parter coming.”
