“Filipina Canadian’s Love Story with Hockey in Canada”

Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian living in Vancouver and a devoted Edmonton Oilers fan, shares her journey of falling in love with hockey in Canada. Her fascination with the sport began during the 2010 Winter Olympics, where she witnessed Sidney Crosby’s golden goal in an intense final against the U.S. The unity and jubilation that followed the victory across the country deeply moved her as a newcomer from the Philippines.

Transitioning into life in Canada, Erlinda gradually embraced hockey as an integral part of Canadian culture. Attending her first live game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers play against the Anaheim Ducks, she was captivated by the electrifying atmosphere of the arena and the passionate fans. This experience marked the beginning of her immersion into the local hockey scene, where she discovered the significance of the sport in her new community.

As Erlinda settled in Edmonton, she noticed the pervasive presence of hockey in everyday life, from coworkers sporting Oilers’ jerseys to the impact of game outcomes on office morale. Delving deeper into the sport, she learned about iconic figures like Wayne Gretzky and the fierce rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary, known as the “Battle of Alberta.”

Her growing interest in hockey led Erlinda to actively follow games on TV, eagerly anticipating key matchups like the Battle of Alberta. She even adorned her kitchen with small towels bearing the Oilers’ logo, symbolizing her evolving connection to the sport and her adopted home.

After relocating to Vancouver in 2016, Erlinda’s passion for hockey was reignited when she met Mike, a fellow enthusiast. Their shared love for the game brought them closer, with Saturday night hockey and Canucks games becoming cherished rituals in their relationship. Through Mike, Erlinda gained a deeper understanding of hockey terminology and game dynamics, bridging their differences and fostering a mutual appreciation for each other’s interests.

Despite their diverse backgrounds and preferences, Erlinda and Mike found harmony in celebrating their individuality while embracing shared experiences. From attending tennis events together to enjoying hockey nights at home, they learned to cherish and respect each other’s passions.

As their love story unfolded, hockey became a unifying force, intertwining with their lives and enriching their bond. Whether donning Canucks or Oilers jerseys at games, Erlinda and Mike embody the spirit of love prevailing over differences, symbolizing the enduring power of sports to unite and connect people. Through her personal journey, Erlinda highlights the transformative impact of hockey in shaping her sense of belonging and fostering meaningful connections in her life.
