Paul George, a player for the Philadelphia 76ers, received a 25-game suspension from the NBA for breaking the league’s anti-drug rules, as announced on Saturday. The specific nature of the violation and substance involved was not disclosed by the NBA. In a statement to ESPN, George admitted to taking something that was deemed “improper.”
Acknowledging the importance of mental health discussions in recent years, George mentioned seeking treatment for his own issues and mistakenly taking an inappropriate medication. He expressed remorse to the team and fans, taking full accountability for his actions.
The suspension, stipulated by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association, indicates that this is George’s first violation. The suspension began on Saturday during Philadelphia’s game against New Orleans. George, a nine-time all-star, stands to lose approximately $11.7 million from his $51.7 million salary, equating to about $469,691.72 for each of the 25 games missed.
A portion of the forfeited salary will offset Philadelphia’s luxury tax burden, reducing it by around $1.3 million. George is set to be eligible to return on March 25 when Philadelphia faces Chicago, with 10 regular-season games left for the 76ers at that point.
Currently standing at 26-21, the 76ers are sixth in the Eastern Conference. The team holds a 16-11 record with George on the court and a 10-10 record when he is absent.
Joel Embiid, a two-time NBA scoring champion, emphasized the challenge of replacing George as the Sixers aim for the playoffs without one of their key contributors. Head coach Nick Nurse refrained from discussing his conversation with George post-suspension, commending George’s positive impact on the team despite the setback.
George has maintained a scoring average of 16 points in 27 games this season, ranking third on the team behind Tyrese Maxey (29.4) and Joel Embiid (25.7). Despite signing a lucrative contract in 2024, George’s initial year in Philadelphia was marred by injuries, resulting in one of his least productive seasons.
Having undergone knee surgery in July and missing the start of this season, George, along with Embiid, played a crucial role in the Sixers’ playoff aspirations.
