“250 Missing After Boat Capsizes En Route to Malaysia”

At least 250 individuals, comprising Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, have been reported missing following a boat capsizing in the Andaman Sea en route to Malaysia, according to the refugee and migration agencies of the United Nations. The Bangladesh Coast Guard confirmed that nine individuals, including three Rohingya and six Bangladeshis, were rescued on April 9 by the Bangladesh flag carrier M.T. Meghna Pride after the vessel sank.

The exact details surrounding the incident remain unclear, with the fate of any ongoing search efforts being unknown. The trawler departed from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, carrying a significant number of passengers bound for Malaysia, as stated by the UN high commissioner for refugees and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in a joint statement. The agencies attributed the sinking of the overcrowded boat to a combination of overcrowding, adverse weather conditions, and rough seas.

Shari Nijman, a UNCHR communication officer in Cox’s Bazar, mentioned that no further updates were available at the time. The rescued individuals, consisting of eight men and one woman, were confirmed to be safe after being handed over to the coast guard, who subsequently brought them to the police in Teknaf.

The rescue operation was not part of any official search mission since it occurred outside Bangladeshi waters, with the M.T. Meghna Pride crew saving the individuals while en route to Indonesia from Chittagong, Bangladesh. The coast guard official who provided this information preferred to remain anonymous in adherence to official guidelines.

The disappearance of the individuals highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Rohingya refugees, including prolonged displacement and the lack of sustainable solutions. The UNHCR and IOM emphasized that the violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state has created uncertainty around the safe repatriation of Rohingya people back to Myanmar. Limited access to essential services and opportunities in refugee camps continue to drive vulnerable Rohingya refugees towards perilous sea journeys, often enticed by false promises of better prospects abroad.

UNHCR and IOM called on the international community to enhance funding and solidarity to ensure the provision of life-saving aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, where over 1 million Rohingya individuals from Myanmar have sought shelter.
