In a remarkable incident, Odhran McLaughlin faced the challenge of corralling 15,000 scuttling crabs that had spilled onto a highway in Burnfoot, Ireland. McLaughlin, the owner of McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery, received a surprising call about an overturned truck carrying live crabs in County Donegal.
The truck, en route to Portugal with $97,000 worth of brown crabs caught by Irish fishermen, veered off the road, causing the container to burst open, setting the crabs free. When McLaughlin arrived at the scene, he found the crabs scurrying across the highway and towards the nearby sea.
Despite his expertise being in car parts rather than crustaceans, McLaughlin mobilized the local communities of Burnfoot, Greencastle, and Moville for help. With the assistance of crab fishermen, a veterinarian, and numerous volunteers, they spent 18 hours in the dead of night rounding up the crabs, placing them in sandbags, and returning them to the container using a crane.
The collaborative effort of 80 individuals resulted in the successful recovery of 95% of the escaped crabs, with only a few perishing in the accident. Regrettably, the rescued crabs, initially intended for restaurants, were deemed unsuitable for consumption due to their ordeal.
While the cause of the truck mishap remains uncertain, McLaughlin speculated that unfamiliarity with the rural roads of Donegal might have contributed to the incident. Despite the challenging experience, McLaughlin expressed his relief at not having to deal with crabs again anytime soon.
